Associated Term: Fall 2021
Levels: Undergraduate DE/Internet Campus Lecture Schedule Type Internet or WWW (DO NOT USE) Instructional Method Learning Objectives: Psychology is a uniquely broad and diverse field of study. While the most common notion of a psychologist is that of a therapist, to think of all psychologists as clinical practitioners presents an incomplete picture of psychology. A major goal of this course is to complete the picture and show you the whole field of modern-day psychology. Most psychologists are scientists, trying to understand why ordinary people think and act the way they do. Just as other sciences seek to uncover fundamental laws and principles about the natural world, psychology tries to discover the laws that describe, predict, and explain human mental processes and behavior. Successful completion of this course fulfills a General Education Social Science requirement and will assist you in accomplishing the following: • Describing factual and conceptual knowledge of psychology. Psychology is a broad social science. I will provide you with a general survey of the fundamental concepts, principles and theories underlying human behavior and mental processes, and their cultural and historical contexts. • Explaining how and why psychological research is conducted. Psychology is grounded in research. I will help you learn about the discipline’s various research methods, and understand the inter-relatedness of theory, research, and application in addressing social and cultural issues. • Applying psychology to understand yourself, others, and society. Psychology applies to each of us individually, in our interactions with each other, and as a society. I will help you understand how psychology applies to you, social interactions, and broader societal and cultural issues.
